Here’s a top for all the doctors – just mark the area with a sharpie
When my wife had knee surgery, in pre-op they gave her a special marker to write “Yes” and “No” on the knee to be operated on and the the knee NOT to be operated on. I got the impression that is becoming common in better hospitals.
(The special marker is healthier than a Sharpie – no nasty solvent & fumes for starters.)
You’d be surprised how many hospitals don’t follow these kind of simple procedures that could bring the number of wrong surgery cases to practically zero. In 2006 – more than 6% of hospitals didn’t regularly follow a surgical marking procedure such as you mentioned! (see the last slide in this presentation http://csect.in/Yc9qZU )
