Natural Selection

Natural Selection and Competitive Exclusion - by C-Section Comics

Man is good at killing things.
That’s the reason we all are
at the food chain’s highest peak
else we wouldn’t get that far.

Man is good at building things,
individually or in groups
cities factories towns – they’re great!
(Though they’re bad for nature – whoops!)

But Man’s about to be replaced,
his legacy about to fade.
Swapped by robots big and strong.
(Of course they are – since they’re man-made.)

And so our Man, who’s so creative,
will not be able to conserve
his own self, and thus we’ll finally
get the fate we all deserve.

The more precise term to the biological mechanism shown in the comic is “competitive exclusion”. The term is attributed to Russian biologist Gerogii Gause, but the principle described by this term is already present in Charles Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection. Here’s a quote from “Darwin’s Origin of Species:”

“From these several considerations I think it inevitably follows, that as new species in the course of time are formed through natural selection, others will become rarer and rarer, and finally extinct. The forms which stand in closest competition with those undergoing modification and improvement, will naturally suffer most.”

Here’s another comic about Evolution and Natural Selection. And here’s an old comic about the Evolution of Man.
